Viettel to invest $250m in Teletalk
Wed, Sep 30th, 2009 9:10 pm BdST
Dhaka, Sept 30 (bdnews24.com) –Vietnam's state telecoms operator Veittel will buy stakes and invest $250 million in mobile-phone operator Teletalk, the telecommunications minister said on Wednesday.

They will forward a written proposal in a week, Raziuddin Razu said

Viettel will become a partner of Teletalk contrary to rumours being spread by some people that Teletalk will be sold out, he said at a news conference.

On possible terms of agreement, the minister said the company will reinvest instead of taking out any profits from the investment in Bangladesh in three years.

After that, Viettel will start taking profits from Bangladesh for 15 years before winding up.

Razu also said eight crore people of Vietnam whose population is 8.5 crore people have access to mobile phones and Viettel provides them free telephone sets and Internet link.

Like in Vietnam, it will also provide free Internet connectivity in educational institutions in Bangladesh, he added.

The Vietnamese mobile-phone company will set up 19,500 BTS, bring 3.5 crore customers under the network, set up 50,000-kilometre fibre cables, use three-G technology, the minister said.

Their initial investment will aim to rope in 30 percent of broadband customers, Razu added.
